The 25th September saw the York St. John Student’s Union annual Fresher’s Fair take place welcoming new and returning students to York and their campus. Eboracum Lodge No 1611, proud to be York’s only University Scheme affiliated lodge, saw this as an ideal opportunity to introduce the students to the traditions and values of Freemasonry and how Freemasonry can enrich their lives as a key part of their university journey.
Under the excellent lead of Brother Josh Igoe, the Lodge’s University Scheme Officer, ably assisted by Brother Paul Revel, the Lodge set up a “Freemasons Information” stall ready for the influx of students.
The queues of students steadily built up during the day and the hall was very busy with many students, both men and women, visiting the Eboracum stand. Information was given out and all questions ably answered. Also of interest to the students was mention of the “York Unlocked” weekend on the 5th and 6th October which will provide them with the opportunity to visit St. Saviourgate to see a Masonic Lodge, meet masons and find out more about the Craft.
It was a very successful day with an estimated 2,400 students visiting the fair. Will this effort result in some of them joining Masonry? Will they contact the Eboracum Lodge Membership Officer, Worshipful Brother David Bowman on dbowman1952@hotmail.com to progress membership? Well you’ll just have to watch this space to see.
Thanks go to all involved especially as this was the first time such a stand has been used but whatever the outcome, Eboracum Lodge will definitely be back at next year’s Fresher’s Fair.
