Rejuvenating the Old Globe Lodge

  • Mickey Ward

It was a spectacular night for the Old Globe Lodge 200 in Scarborough on the 19th of August 2026. The Lodge had seen a steady decline in numbers over the past decade. Approximately 3 years ago we decided that as one of the oldest lodges in the province that we could not and would not submit to further decline.

As with many new initiates retention was a problem, so to move forwards we decided to change the social dynamic of the lodge with fresh ideas from new members and also the much-needed guidance and stability from the Senior Brethren. 'How was this achieved?' I hear you asking…. This was achieved by introducing more social events, white table events, more inclusion of the newer Brethren to perform very small speaking roles and ritual within the open lodge setting. This is often asking the newest member to read the fire evacuation notice, splitting ritual between two or more new members or even doing the raffle in the festive board so as to meet the existing members, we’ve all got those members that have had the same seat in the festive board since time immemorial! So why not get those new members and old members sat next to each other and move it around from time to time?

Moving on from this we often meet at the masonic hall on a weekend with an “open mic” sort of set up ( and the bar is open ). Whereby members both old an new can come and have a go at any pieces they may be leaning or want to "have a go at” We often let the newer candidates have a go in the Master’s, Warden’s and Deacon’s positions with their ritual book just to get a feel for hopefully what is to come.

A perfect example of this is our very own Brother Jan who’s raising was recently conducted, the first in the Lodge for several years, his enthusiasm for masonry and his commitment to learning ritual was very apparent for our guests to see. We now have ceremonies most meetings with a good commitment to the ladder by several of our newer Brethren. Jan thoroughly enjoyed his night and produced this inspiring write up:

“Another milestone indeed on my Masonic journey.

Two years ago, I was initiated and warmly welcomed by my Mother Lodge,Old Globe Lodge 200. Since then, my Brethren have always made every occasion feel special, undoubtedly giving their 100% to ensure that every ceremony is performed to the best of their ability. That is why I always try to reciprocate by doing the same preparing myself properly, being ready, and giving my very best whenever I am given the opportunity.

Preparation has become an important part of my journey. I have learned that giving your best is not simply about what happens on the night itself, but about the work, practice and commitment that comes beforehand. There is something very rewarding about putting in the preparation, stepping forward with confidence, and knowing that you have done everything you can to honour the ceremony and the Brethren who have entrusted you with a part in it.

At first, it can be daunting to stand among Brethren who have many more years of experience in Masonry and are truly exceptional in their respective parts of the ritual. Knowing that I was not accustomed to speaking in front of a large crowd made it even more intimidating. But instead of backing down, I chose to take it as an inspiration.

When I was given the opportunity to participate, I made sure not to disappoint. With a little push, encouragement and words of inspiration from my Brethren, it became much easier. Their support gave me the confidence to step outside my comfort zone and challenge myself.

Looking back, I have learned that you will never truly know what you are capable of unless you give it a try. And if things do not go as planned, there is always an opportunity to learn, make the necessary changes, prepare better, and try again.

More importantly, Masonry has taught me the value of humility. It has reminded me to remain grounded, regardless of what I achieve, and to always recognise that there is more to learn and room to grow. At the same time, the lessons and experiences I have gained through Masonry have given me greater confidence not only within the Lodge, but also in my day to day life

There is one piece of wisdom that has stayed with me throughout this journey: “From acorn comes tree.” These wise words were shared with me by a wise man and a dear friend, and they have continued to inspire me along the way. They reminded me that every great journey begins with something small, and that with patience, perseverance and dedication, we can grow into something far greater than we first imagined.

Those words kept me going during the challenging moments and helped me make the decision to continue this lifelong journey in Masonry. Looking back, I realise that I too started as that small acorn an Entered Apprentice with much to learn and through the guidance, encouragement and brotherhood I have received, I continue to grow.

And now, around my waist is an apron that carries a history of its own. It once belonged to an old member of our Lodge, and to me, it represents far more than just a piece of Masonic regalia. It carries a connection to those who came before me and a reminder that we are all part of something much bigger than ourselves. I will treasure it dearly, with the hope that one day I can pass it on to another Brother and allow its journey to continue.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons I have taken from my journey so far. We are not only here to learn from those who came before us, but also to inspire those who come after us. I was fortunate enough to have Senior Brethren who encouraged me, pushed me and believed in me when I was still finding my confidence. I hope that, in my own small way, I can do the same for newer Brethren to encourage them to step forward, prepare themselves, give their best, and never be afraid to challenge themselves.

From a Lewis to a Master Mason, this journey has taught me not only about Masonry, but also about myself. I am grateful for every lesson, every opportunity, every challenge, and most of all, for the Brethren who have encouraged me along the way.

Here’s to another milestone, to continued growth, and to a lifelong journey of learning, brotherhood, and becoming better than I was yesterday. So mote it be.”

In conclusion I feel it’s all about the whole experience of Freemasonry and with lots of new and enthusiastic Brethren the future of the Old Globe Lodge is now much more secure. If you ever wish to come and visit please do not hesitate to contact us and you will receive a very warm welcome.
