Acklam promotes chess

For some time now, Bros Laird Sky and Lewis Fraser, from Acklam Lodge, have enjoyed engaging in one of their favourite pastimes, namely, playing chess. It soon became something that drew the attention of others who were watching, and so the Linthorpe Village Chess Club was formed.

The Chess Club is a growing community chess group based in Middlesbrough. It regularly hosts over-the-board friendly matches against neighbouring groups and chess clubs.

The atmosphere of the club focuses heavily on social connection, learning and welcoming students from nearby institutions such as Teesside University, alongside local residents.

When the Master of Acklam Lodge, W.M. Ben Dorée, heard about this new initiative in the local community, he visited the club, as he enjoys the occasional game of chess, and saw for himself how popular the Club was becoming. This resulted in him donating to the Club 2 new chess boards and pieces, which were given to Bro Laird Sky and Bro. Lewis Fraser, who were the founder members of the club.
The Chess Club continues to meet every Monday Evening at 7.00pm, at the Conservative Club, Middlesbrough, and is open to beginners, casual players and seasoned competitors of all skill levels. Why not come down and have a go!
